Q: I’m a French director, but I shot a film in Asia, with an Asian cast and European crew. Do I submit to the International Competition or the Asia International Competition?
A: When submitting to the Live-action Competition, please select the category (International, Asia International, or Japan) based on the director’s or rights holder’s nationality.
The final decision will be made by the SSFF & ASIA Committee based on an evaluation of the following criteria:
- Director’s nationality (as written on their passport)
- Shooting location
- Language used in the film
- Nationality of the cast (as written on their passports)
- Source of funding
Q: Can one film be submitted to multiple competitions?
A: Yes, if it meets the eligibility criteria for each competition.
However:
- A film may only be submitted to one of the Live-action Competition categories (International, Asia International, or Japan).
- Animated documentary shorts may be submitted to either the Animation Competition or the Non-Fiction Competition, but not both.
Q: Can I cancel my submission after completing payment?
A: Submission fees are non-refundable under any circumstances.
Q: What file format is required for upload?
A: We only accept files in MOV or MP4 format.
Q: I encountered an error uploading my file. Can I send a DVD, USB, or Blu-ray instead?
A: Due to shipping issues, we do not accept any physical media for submission.
Q: My film has not been screened in Japan but is available online. Does this violate the Japan premiere rule?
A: It depends on the language and subtitle status.
Your film must retain Japan premiere status until the end of Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2026 in Tokyo.
The following will disqualify a film:
- Screenings in Japan via any medium (screenings, festivals, events, etc.) before/during the festival
- Films available online with Japanese subtitles and/or in Japanese language before/during the festival
- Non-dialogue films available online
Exceptions:
- Films in non-Japanese language without Japanese subtitles that are available online outside of Japan remain eligible
- Japan premiere is not required for the Japan Competition, Animation Competition, Non-Fiction Competition, and Cinematic Tokyo Competition.
Q: My film won’t be ready by the deadline. Can I request an extension?
A: Unfortunately, no extensions are permitted.
To ensure fairness, SSFF & ASIA applies the same rules to all filmmakers and does not allow exceptions.
Q: Can I submit a work-in-progress (WIP)?
A: Yes. Works in Progress (WIPs) are accepted, provided they are picture-locked and have temporary audio and/or color.
Please note: We do not accept WIPs that have missing scenes or anticipate significant changes to their duration.
All submitted films must be completed by the end of the month following their submission. For example, a film submitted on August 15th, 2025, must be completed by September 30, 2025.
Q: When will I know the results of my submission?
A:
- Monthly shortlists begin in October 2025
- Final selections will be announced by the end of April 2026
